Matthew Mitchell / Technical Director

Build the world.
Prove the work.

I direct the systems behind playable worlds, production tools, simulation, procedural workflows, local AI, and connected media, then make the decisions inspectable.

Selected work

Evidence before adjectives.

Each case study identifies the production problem, Matthew's role, the decisions made, and the artifacts that prove the result.

RHM main cast, transformed forms, and Dirge family lineupCase 01
RHM / Connected-world development

A game world designed to hold more than a game.

RHM connects gameplay, characters, comics, artifacts, music, and production tools around one authored world. The case study shows the decisions, constraints, implementation proof, and public outcomes without exposing private canon.

Ward 9 / Production leadership

One canon across game, soundtrack, comic, and trailer.

The Ward 9 production lane coordinates story constraints, patient evidence, portrait standards, audio delivery, image approvals, storyboard reviews, trailer cuts, and public-release boundaries.

RHM / Character and asset pipeline

Generation is only the first gate.

A documented image-to-3D study tested generation tiers, remeshing, rigging, deformation, high-density weighting, and Unreal handoff decisions. Failed approaches were measured and retired instead of hidden.

RHM / Digital comic production

A repeatable narrative-to-reader pipeline.

The comic system moves from canon and prose through scripts, page plans, text-free artwork, deterministic panels, lettering, HTML readers, and publication. The first three issues establish RHM's interior journey.

Five systems. Five live demonstrations. One production philosophy.

This is the index, not a duplicate gallery. Each project opens its own focused GitHub Pages experience where reviewers can operate the public demonstration, inspect evidence, and understand what Matthew directed.

Playable evidence

Game systems, visible in the build.

The art establishes identity. These captures prove implementation: movement, mission communication, interaction prompts, player state, enemies, and VFX working together inside Unreal.

RHM: The Foundation / Gameplay architecture

A mechanic is not finished until the player can read it.

The training-zone capture connects objective language, world markers, hostile silhouettes, character-state VFX, compass direction, and forward motion in one playable frame.

LightKeeper / Prototype validation

Debug evidence belongs in a technical portfolio.

The editor overlays are the point here: collision bounds, interaction placement, character scale, lighting, and spatial composition are being tested before presentation polish. This separates development truth from promotional imagery.

Production tools

Interfaces that turn a large world into decisions.

These are working production surfaces, shown as interface proof. Their private canon records remain outside the public portfolio.

Loop and component maps

Playable loops, locomotion authority, attack-component boundaries, and production tracking turn design intent into build contracts.

Technical art

Asset audit surfaces

Generation tiers, topology, rigging, deformation, performance constraints, and rejected paths remain visible as evidence.

Media operations

Approval boards

Storyboards, album reviews, image approvals, and trailer evidence keep creative sign-off separate from final delivery.

Asset systems

Design, separate, generate, audit, then prove.

Selected RHM evidence shows the construction logic without exposing source models, private repositories, or unreleased narrative material.

RHM resonant weapon family on a studio background
Resonant artifacts / visual system

A weapon family, not five unrelated props.

Shared matte-black structure, restrained gold inlays, and controlled cyan resonance establish a language that survives concept art, 3D generation, materials, and animation tests.

5 hero artifacts1 shared material language3 verified deform strategies
Twelve RHM characters compared across hero and rigged 3D tiers
Character batch / 3D audit

Twelve identities, compared at the same gate.

The audit places source heroes, rigged versions, and quality tiers into one review surface so fidelity loss and outliers can be seen immediately.

RHM glider hero mesh and rigged comparison
Hero versus rigged

Optimization is a comparison, not a promise.

The glider proof preserves a hero source beside its rig-ready result, making the production trade visible before the asset reaches gameplay.

NPC modular character kit

One identity. Swappable production layers.

The Cargo Civilian is separated into an approved full look, a neutral rigging base, and reusable garment pieces. That makes character variation a controlled assembly problem instead of a new full-body generation pass.

  1. Lock the identity reference
  2. Generate and rig the bald base
  3. Fit hair and garment layers
  4. Retarget, test, and inspect clipping

Technical finding

The remesh step was not improving the source.

A portfolio should show judgment, including the moment a familiar technique becomes the wrong technique.

Three quality tiers of a Vaekthir character asset
Observed / measured / corrected

Quality was set at generation.

The raw API heroes contained usable geometry. Remeshing toward 300K quads upsampled many sources without creating new detail, while separate website-flow assets arrived at a genuinely higher source tier.

  • Raw heroes ranged from roughly 82K to 252K vertices.
  • The remesh produced roughly 350K vertices without recovering missing detail.
  • The production decision moved attention upstream to generation quality and downstream to engine-ready materials and outlines.
Deformation proof

High-density props required a different weighting strategy.

The staff used verified automatic weights; the belt and glove moved to procedural weighting after density and topology made ordinary automation unreliable.

Staff rig bending smoothly
Staff rig / five-bone spine

Verify weights, then deform.

Automatic weights were sampled instead of trusted by appearance alone. The finished proof shows a smooth multi-bone curl without visible pinching.

Belt rig procedural deformation test
Belt rig / angular weighting

Procedural weights bypassed silent failure.

The 1.6M-vertex loop was weighted by angle around the ring, providing a construction that could be sampled and verified without destructive decimation.

Media operations proof

Ward 9 moves through controlled approvals.

The sequence below is a review animatic, presented as process evidence rather than mislabeled as a final trailer.

Operating method

How the work moves.

A shared evidence catalog keeps studio storytelling and portfolio claims aligned while allowing each site to speak to its own audience.

01 / Frame

Define the promise

Audience, experience, production boundary, and what must be proven.

02 / Build

Create the artifact

Systems, assets, media, tools, and review surfaces are produced together.

03 / Test

Measure the result

Visual checks, runtime evidence, costs, failure paths, and comparisons are recorded.

04 / Deliver

Package the proof

Public work, case studies, handoffs, and source records stay traceable.

Work with the evidence open.
